• Entering more than one keyword
  To search for records that contain two or more keywords, use the "+" symbol between the words, e.g.:

  buildings+ohio
  To locate records that contain both the keywords "buildings" AND "ohio". If you enter keywords separated by a space, e.g.:
  buildings ohio
  You will locate records that contain either "buildings" OR "ohio."

• Searching for records that do not contain a particular keyword
  To eliminate records containing a particular keyword from your search, use the "-" symbol before the word you wish to "not" out , e.g.:

  buildings-ohio
  To locate records that contain the keywords "buildings" but NOT "ohio".

• Searching for a phrase
  To search for a phrase, use quotation marks, e.g.

  "young men's christian"

• Searching by Y-ARCH ID#
  The Kautz Family YMCA Archives has assigned a unique ID number to each item for which there is a corresponding digital image. In search results, Y-ARCH ID#s are displayed in the field labeled "Y-ARCH ID#" and are in the format of a letter followed, by a number, e.g. P13 or D28. If you wish to contact the Archives about seeing the original item, it is helpful to have this ID. If you already know the Y-ARCH ID#, you may search for the image by selecting "Y-ARCH ID#" from the drop-down search menu.

• Searching by Digital ID#
  A unique ID number was assigned to each digital image in the database. In search results, digital ID#s are displayed in the field labeled "Record Number" and are in the format of the letters "ya" followed by a six-digit number, e.g. ya000041. If you wish to contact the Archives about using the image or acquiring a high-resolution copy, it is helpful to have this ID. If you already know the Digital ID#, you may search for the image by selecting "Digital ID#" from the drop-down search menu.

• Limiting Your Search by Series
  Each image in the database has been assigned to a topical series, listed in the menu. To limit your search to images in a particular series, scroll to the series name and click on it. You may select more than one series by holding down the CTRL or Command key on your keyboard as you click on the series name(s). Note that each image is assigned to only one series, although many are related to two or more possible topics. For best results, you may wish to select "all" and use keywords to refine your search instead.
