WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U. S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, and research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Please refer all inquiries about citing, quoting from, or reproducing materials to the appropriate archivist.

The University of Minnesota Libraries' Archives and Special Collections units conduct copy services in accordance with federal copyright law and copyright policies set by the University of Minnesota Libraries.

General Information

The Archives and Special Collections units will make and provide photocopies or photographic reproductions of items in its collections as a service and convenience to users. Provision and subsequent use of reproductions is subject to the following restrictions:

  1. The Archives reserves the right to restrict copying, subject to conditions such as the fragility of the originals, the amount of staff time required to do the work, restrictions specified by the donor, or provisions of the copyright law. We do not duplicate entire archival collections, or all the text of individual books, manuscripts, or boxes of material.
  2. Archives staff members will make all photocopies. Use of personal copiers or scanners is prohibited. Contact the archives regarding cameras, digital cameras, and video cameras.
  3. Duplication by the Archives does not transfer either copyright or property right, nor does it constitute permission to publish in excess of "fair use" or to display materials. The user is responsible for obtaining such permission.
  4. Copies are made for personal use only. They may not be transferred to another person or institution without prior written authorization.
