Ruth (Mrs. Ellis) Peilen was an active volunteer in the Minneapolis Jewish community. This collection records her involvement with the Minneapolis Federation for Jewish Service especially the Urban Affairs Committee (1968-70). She was also active in the Minneapolis Chapter of National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), where she spearheaded a program called Women in Service to Education (WISE 1967-83) which placed volunteers to help teach reading in grade schools. She was also a member of state’s Industrial Commission, serving on the Wage Advisory Board, The collection chronicles Peilen’s leadership within both the Federation and NCJW.
An oral history interview transcript is located with materials of the Minneapolis Chapter of National Council of Jewish Women. Information can also be obtained from the 1998 dissertation, Building Community, Building Bridges by Linda Mack Schloff
