Inventory: Minneapolis Talmud Torah
Records, 4 linear feet
Provenance: Received as a gift from the Minneapolis Talmud Torah in 1987 and added to in 1988. No restrictions on use.
History: The Minneapolis Talmud Torah grew out of the Hebrew Free School, founded in about1894 by Kenesseth Israel. The name, Talmud Torah, was adopted in 1913. The first class graduated two years later. By 1920, it had taken over the South Side Talmud Torah. The school moved several times and, at present, occupies a building in St. Louis Park. Dr. George Gordon was the true founder of the school, which used Ivrit b'Ivrit. He served as Director from 1928 until 1941.
The Talmud Torah has received many national awards throughout the years, and has seen many graduates enter the rabbinate. It was the only major local beneficiary of the Mpls. Federation for Jewish Service for many years.
