Jewish Vocational Service Accession Number 149
Boxes 46A and 46B
Records 1941-1989 3.0 Linear Feet
Received as a gift from the Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) of St. Paul in 1988 and 1989. No restrictions on use.
History: The Jewish Vocational Service of St Paul was established in 1946 to help veterans and young people plan careers. These groups were soon joined by displaced persons. With the decline of refugee and veteran placement and the diminution of youth counseling the first self survey was undertaken in 1952. The Survey suggested that other services be added such as rehabilitation of the physically and mentally handicapped. To that end, sheltered workshops were instituted in 1953. In the 1960s sheltered workshops for the elderly were set up at the Jewish Home for the Aged and at the Jewish Community Center. The JVS has also served the general community through programs such as Neighborhood Youth Corps, Career Opportunities Preparation for Employment (COPE) and a Career Guidance and Training Center, administered under CETA funding. With the constriction of government monies available to social planning agencies and the shrinkage of Russian immigrants in the 1970s, the agency raison d’etre was called into question.
