C10763. -- B1767. Wright, Sean M. "The Tie That Binds," BSJ, 28, No. 3 (September 1978), 143-151, 156. illus. Since 1891, artists have depicted Sherlock and Mycroft as wearing a distinctive tie in all situations, except when disguised. George Hutchinson began this trend in the Ward, Lock, Bowden edition of Stud in 1891. The tradition was continued in October of that year when Sidney Paget began his celebrated illustrations in The Strand Magazine. Paget's influence was so great that, according to James Montgomery, after he died, "the artists who followed him -- several of greater skill and reputation -- were compelled to subordinate themselves to the Paget style in all essential particulars," which seemed to include the tie. This tie is the one worn by Bragington, Norwood, Wontner, Rathbone, Cushing, Stephens, Williamson, and other actors: a bow tie worn under a revers collar, often called a "continental" bow.
C10764. Berendt, John. "The Slipper," Esquire Magazine, 113, No. 3 (March 1990), 48. illus. ----------. ----------, APD (June-July 1990), (I). The author phoned Stanley MacKenzie in an attempt to find out if there is a Canonical reference to Holmes wearing slippers. MacKenzie found one in Blue: "You look cold, Mr. Ryder. Pray take the basket chair. I will just put on my slippers before we settle this little matter of yours." (Holmes) "It's the only overt reference to Holmes wearing slippers, but it proves he did wear them." (MacKenzie)

C10767. Budd, Elaine. "Stalking the Deerstalker," BSJ, 32, No. 4 (December 1982), 211-213. Although Holmes may never have worn a fore-and-aft cap, this unique hat has become an essential part of his appearance. His deerstalkered profile is used to sell products, Sherlockians wear the cap as a symbol of their devotion, and the hat also has some utilitarian value. It is not true, however, as the author believes, that its wearers are "super-cool, brilliant, witty aesthetes, rather than athletes." After all, the Master himself relished the physical as much as the intellectual life.

C10800. -- A3809. [Kennedy, Bruce.] "Editorial," SOS, 3, No. 2 (July 1969), 1-2. If one accepts the hypothesis that Doyle was a fine cricketer (he was), that he had a large acquaintance with professional cricketers of the period (he did), and that he had a good memory (he did), then the assumption that he used the names of many cricketers in his stories is not so far fetched."
