THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION OF OLIVIA IRVINE DODGE

Olivia Irvine Dodge was born in St. Paul in 1918. She attended the Summit School in St. Paul, St. Timothy's School in Maryland, and the French School in New York City. Mrs. Dodge lives in West St. Paul on a tract of land that accommodates the Thomas Irvine Dodge Nature Center, a facility which provides instruction for some forty thousand young people each year. She began collecting material about Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945 shortly after his death. In a few years she developed one of the largest FDR collections in the country. In January 1975 Mrs. Dodge donated her collection to the University of Minnesota.

Paul L. Murphy, Professor of History at the University of Minnesota, made the following observation about Mrs. Dodge in a catalog produced for the opening of her collection. "Olivia Irvine Dodge had long been an admirer of Roosevelt, and one day, in May, 1945, while hurrying down Michigan Avenue in Chicago was drawn to a pamphlet in a bookstore window. It was the first printing of FDR's Jefferson Day speech, Our Realization of Tomorrow, prepared for broadcast on April 13th, 1945, but undelivered because of his death on April 12th. And as Mrs. Dodge tells the story: 'I knew that was something I had to buy.' In subsequent years, Mrs. Dodge acquired a large number of books pamphlets, and other printed pieces, and also letters, portraits, sheet music, phonograph records, busts, china, campaign items, and other ephemera which she came to display in the collection room of her home on Summit Avenue in St. Paul, now the Minnesota Governor's Mansion. By 1950, the magazine, The Franklin D. Roosevelt Collector, indicated in its November issue that Mrs. Dodge's collection 'is considered to be among the foremost in the country.' This extensive collection is an accurate monument to the feelings and dilemmas -- and desires to express both -- which those writing about the thirty-second President felt. The collection is itself an important intellectual artifact, reflecting in its hundreds of works, the felt need of literally dozens of Americans, from professional scholars, and journalists, to friends, and humble citizens, to set the record straight on FDR. And if that literature now, to a new generation, which sees Roosevelt through lenses ground by the experience of cold war, Korea, Viet Nam, and economic and social chaos and destruction, seems strangely two dimensional, this in no way diminishes its importance as primary source material for a study of the man, his new deal, and his generation."
