HISTORY OF TWENTY-SIXTH WARD AND
HIGHLAND PARK BRANCH YMCAs

The Twenty-Sixth Ward branch of the YMCA in Brooklyn, New York, was
originally part of the Brooklyn Association of the YMCA. The building at
Pennsylvania and Liberty Avenues opened on November 5, 1893. It contained a
lecture hall, classrooms, a gymnasium, a game room, a bowling alley and a
plunge -- a swimming tank about 15 by 20 feet and too shallow for diving. The
Twenty-Sixth Ward branch was known for its gymnastics and baseball teams; the
boys baseball team won the city championship in 1912.

In 1926 a new building opened at 570 Jamaica Avenue and the name of
the branch changed to Highland Park. That address continued to be the home of a
YMCA branch, although its name ultimately changed again. In 1977, the Highland
Park branch offered joint programming with the Ridgewood branch in Queens. By
2008 it had become the North Brooklyn/12 Towns branch.
