Historical Note

The Five Towns Community House began in 1907 when Mrs Margaret Sage,
at the suggestion of Mrs. Daniel Lord, decided to establish a small trades
school at Inwood, Long Island in Nassau County, New York. Margaret Sage, wife
of philanthropist Russell Sage, advanced funds to purchase the land for the
school and securities to be held as a permanent endowment fund, the interest
from which would be used to maintain the school. Named the Margaret Sage
Industrial School, the agency's primary objective was to provide vocational
training classes and "to develop the young people in the community into
responsible citizens through helping them make normal adjustments to the
complications of present-day social and economic life." The school offered
recreational and cultural activities as well as vocational training for boys
and girls. Its seven acres of playground were used by the youth of the
surrounding communities.

In November, 1910, the school's enrollment totaled 291 pupils,
predominantly drawn from Inwood and North Lawrence, Long Island. The staff
consisted of four teachers. The school changed its name to the Nassau
Industrial School in 1911. By 1913, enrollment had increased to 400 and the
staff to six. In addition, the school had developed a day nursery center for
young children and strengthened its Americanization and citizenship training
programs. The school housed the area Family Service Association from 1913 to
1932 and the District Nursing Association from 1921 to 1935. From 1926 to 1931,
the school was active in establishing the Five Towns Community Chest. The
school became a member of United Neighborhood Houses of New York in 1923 and of
the National Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers in 1945.

The school's finances suffered during the war years and the Great
Depression. It was forced to reduce the size of its staff, enrollment, and
budget several times. During the Depression, it operated a WPA nursery and a
National Youth Administration program. In 1942, the school became the Five
Towns Community House. The name change reflected the shift in its objectives
from vocational training to cultural, recreational, and educational programs
for small neighborhood groups. It also coincided with an increased emphasis on
group work techniques and activities on the part of the professional staff.
Beginning circa 1945, a professionally trained staff of social workers and
graduate students from neighboring colleges offered specialized group work
services. During this time, the house also began to offer in-service training
for social work students. Following World War II, in response the population
changes in Nassau County, the house emphasized race relations and worked with
minority group leaders to build community-serving programs. For example, the
house experimented with an integrated day camp in 1965 and hosted a women's
group of Jewish and African American women. In addition, the construction of an
expressway and an urban renewal project made housing issues an area of concern
during the post-war years.

In January, 1965, Five Towns received a grant from the Nassau County
Youth Board to expand employment and guidance services in the area. Also,
beginning in 1964, the house staff began reevaluating its programs and
developing fresh approaches to community issues as well as to their existing
programs, such as youth work and child care. The new program structure resulted
in the hiring of additional staff and in building renovations. Membership in
the house appears to have increased in response to the new efforts. The house
also provided consultation and treatment space for the Family Service
Association and Peninsula Child Guidance Clinic. The Visiting Nurse Association
and Planned Parenthood Association also met clients at Five Towns' facilities.
In 1969, Five Towns merged with Project A.B.C. (A Better Community), the local
Office of Economic Opportunity-fund "anti poverty agency." The new agency
appears to have briefly retained the name Five Towns Community House and then
become the Five Towns Community Center. The center is still in operation.

Scope and Content

The Five Towns Community House records consist of minutes, agenda,
correspondence, reports, statistical reports, financial records, newspaper
clippings, press releases, ephemera, and photographs. The records document the
administration, programs, and staff of the house, which served five suburban
communities located on Long Island in Nassau County, New York.

Series 1, Administrative Records, consists primarily of minutes and
correspondence from the board of directors of Five Towns Community House and
its predecessors, the Margaret Sage Industrial School (1907-1911) and the
Nassau Industrial School (1911-1942). Among other topics, the board records
document the funding and finances of the house; its programs and activities;
the purpose, methods, and policies of the house; its relations with the
Community Chest; and routine business of the board. Series 1 also contains
numerous reports, including president's, annual, monthly, and committee
reports. These describe and analyze the work of various committees, classes,
and programs. In particular, reports dating from the 1930s document Five Towns'
shift from an industrial school to a settlement house and community center.
Other types of records in Series 1 include financial records, minutes and
reports from staff meetings, program statistics and evaluations, and
correspondence and reports from the executive director and president.

Series 2, Committee Records, comprises correspondence, minutes, and
reports as well as scattered newspaper clippings, press releases, and
background materials related to the work of various house committees. The
series includes records from committees that were involved with education,
community service and employment programs; the administration and facilities of
the house; and house staff and volunteers.

Series 3, Subjects, Programs and Activities, contains correspondence,
minutes, statistics, reports, publicity materials, manuals, lists, brochures
and other publications, membership records, personnel records, forms, and
ephemera. The records document clubs, classes, events, programs, services and
personnel at the community house from the 1930s through the mid-1960s.

Series 4, Field Work Placements, documents field work training at Five
Towns Community House for graduate and undergraduate social work students from
New York area colleges and universities. For the most part, the records
document arrangements for field work training and the use of field placement
students at the house from the 1940s through the mid-1960s.

Series 5, Group Work Records, is the largest portion of the Five Towns
records. The materials document the administration, activities and leadership
of the houses' youth clubs from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. There are two
sections of group work records: group work reports and evaluations related to
individual clubs (folders 181-382) and reports of conferences between agency
supervisors and group leaders (folders 383-436). Filed with these records are
undergraduate students’ reports of group work observations (folders 437-439)
and papers of a house supervisor, Alice Suzuki (folder 440).

The group work reports are written records of leaders' work with house
groups. These are filed chronologically according year and, thereunder,
alphabetically by the name of the group. This arrangement generally parallels
the program schedule. Most groups functioned from October to May or February to
May and during the summer months. As a result, an individual group’s records
for a period of years will be found in several folders. (For example, materials
on the "Debs" is in folders 184, 216, 240, and 275.) The group work records
generally include leaders' reports of individual group meetings, evaluations of
individual members of the group ("individual summaries"), and a "group
summary." These reports and evaluations give the character, composition, and
activities of the group and usually indicate the attitudes and policies of the
worker. These records also offer insight into group work methods and
techniques, as well as some of its underlying assumptions. They also reflect
the nature of the community and clients involved with Five Towns Community
House. Some records are complete while others are fragmentary.

The supervisory reports are records of conferences between group
leaders and their supervisors. These are filed chronologically by year and
month, generally following the house’s program calendar, and, thereunder,
alphabetically by name. (These records may have restrictions. Please consult
the archivist.)

Series 6, Related Organizations, contains material from local and
county civic, political, and service organization and national or New York area
social welfare and settlement house organizations. The series includes
correspondence, minutes and agenda, memoranda, by-laws, reports, brochures, and
lists. The records document relations between Five Towns Community House and
other organizations in the field; the house's conference participation; and its
cooperative projects with civic, educational, and social welfare agencies. In
particular, the records reflect Five Towns' communication and cooperation with
other organizations in relation to various social issues, including juvenile
delinquency, race relations, recreation, mental health, housing, and youth
services. Series 7, Publicity, consists primarily of photographs. The series
also includes newspaper clippings and press releases.
