In 1942, Jim Kepner began the first Gay and Lesbian archives in Los
Angeles, and it was incorporated as the International Gay and Lesbian Archives
in 1979. Kepner was also responsible for establishing another Gay and Lesbian
library/archives, the ONE Institute. In 1994, the International Gay and Lesbian
Archives and the ONE Institute merged to become the institution it is today.
Duing the 1980s, the independent ONE Institute was in financial straights and
was eventually relocated to the University of Southern California, where it is
currently housed.

Its mission states: "ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives honors
the past, celebrates the present, and enriches the future of all Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender people. We foster acceptance of sexual and gender
diversity by supporting education and research about our heritage and
experience worldwide. ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives is dedicated to
collecting, preserving, documenting, studying, and communicating our history,
our challenges, and our aspirations." The collection contains almost 20,000
books, over 6,000 periodicals, audio/visual materials and special collections
retained because of their historical significance and research value.
