Scope and Content

The collection contains materials from the Committee relating to their work, mainly during the years from 1992 to 1993. Included are memos to the committee, research materials (including interviews, surveys, and related materials from other Big Ten and CIC universities), materials relating to committee reports, copies of the interim and final committee reports, and materials relating to benefits.

Historical Note on the Select Committee for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns

In 1990 University of Minnesota President Nils Hasselmo appointed a Select Committee for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns to investigate the campus climate as experienced by lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. The original chair of the committee was Professor John Beatty (Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior); he was succeeded by Professor Jacquelyn Zita (Women's Studies). In the spring of 1992, Marjorie Cowmeadow, Associate Dean in the General College, was named committee chair.

In 1993 the Select Committee made five essential recommendations to address discrimination and improve campus climate for GLBT people at the University. President’s Select Committee for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns issued “Breaking the Silence,” a report documenting the results of its campus climate research. The report’s five recommendations were: 1. Establish a GLBT Programs Office 2. Provide a full benefits package for the families and children of GLBT employees 3. Establish a GLBT Studies Program 4. Develop educational training programming on GLBT issues and concerns 5. Update all printed publications and materials to reflect diversity in sexual orientation.
