		<head>Biographical Note</head> 
		<p>Frederick Gaines is a local playwright whose plays have been performed
		  across the United States. He attended the University of Nebraska, earning his
		  bachelor's and master's degrees. He also attended the University of Minnesota,
		  earning a Ph.D. and the University of Manchester (England) as a Fulbright
		  Fellow. Mr. Gaines held the McKnight fellowship in playwriting at the Guthrie
		  Theatre (1965-1967) and was playwright in residence at the Asolo Festival
		  Theatre in Sarasota, Florida. Locally, his plays have been performed at the
		  Children's Theater Company, The Eastside Theatre, the University of Minnesota
		  and the Firehouse Theatre. </p>

		<head>Scope and Content Note</head> 
		<p>The collection consists of correspondence and papers regarding Mr.
		  Gaines' plays. The correspondence ncludes letters between Mr. Gaines and
		  actors, actresses, agents, directors and members of the Gaines family. Papers
		  regarding Mr. Gaines' plays include typescripts, mimeographed copies and
		  incomplete and complete drafts of over 100 plays. </p>
