The collection was donated by Mrs. Jane Sherman in 1969.
Biographical Note
John Kurtz Sherman was a music and drama critic in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1898 and attended the University
of Minnesota for a short period of time. John Sherman began his career with the
Minneapolis Star in 1925 and continued with the
paper as critic and books and arts editor until his death on April 19, 1969.
Scope and Content Note
The collection includes correspondence (1936-1968), notebooks
(1948-1967), reviews and other material relating to Sherman's book
Music and Maestros, published in 1952. In
addition, the collection contains copies of Sherman's critical articles and
reviews, speeches and lectures, notes taken during a 1956 tour of Europe and
photos.
