 Biographical Note

Sanders "Sandy" Ackerberg was born in Minneapolis in 1923 and lived in that city for all but the last 13 years of his life. He died in 2009 in Plymouth, MN. He was graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1949 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree.

He worked during his university years for the prominent Minneapolis firm of Liebenberg and Kaplan, and continued in this employment until 1955 when he joined with James Cooperman to form the partnership of Ackerberg and Cooperman, Architects. In 1962 Ackerberg and Cooperman dissolved the partnership and Ackerberg continued to practice architecture until his retirement in 2006.

His many designs include the landmark Capp Towers Motel in owntown Minneapolis (MN) with a pool and domed cocktail lounge on the top floor (known in 2009 as the Millenium Hotel); the Capp Towers Motel, in St. Paul (MN), with a unique accordian-fold exterior walls; a 1958 addition to the Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority House at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (MN); and a number of commercial, residential, and institution structures.
