Historical Note

The Stone Arch Bridge was built in 1883 by James J. Hill's Minneapolis
Union Railway to allow for increased movement of people and goods across the
Mississippi River. The bridge is situated just below St. Anthony Falls and
served as a working railroad bridge until 1965. The bridge is made of native
granite and limestone, measures 2100-feet long by 28-feet wide and consists of
23 arches. It is the only stone arch bridge ever constructed to span the
Mississippi River.
