Biographical Note

Edward Renwick was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 24, 1860.
He attended the public schools of that city and graduated from the local high
school in 1878. In 1882 he went to Chicago to work for O.C. Simonds, who was in
charge of enlarging Graceland Cemetery. Simonds was also a partner in the firm
of Holabird & Simonds, architects, and he induced Renwick to join the
practice as an apprentice draftsman in 1882. Shortly thereafter, Simonds
resigned from the partnership and Martin Roche took his place. Renwick remained
with Holabird & Roche (subsequently Holabird & Root) for the remainder
of his career, spending much of that time as chief estimator and specifications
writer. He retired in the mid-1930s and died in 1941.
