Biographical Note

Charles Maybury was born in Solon, NY on January 13, 1830. He worked
on the family farm until he was sixteen and was educated in the local public
schools. He then was apprenticed to a prominent contractor and builder in
central New York State for about 5 years, following which he became a partner
in the company. After three years, the firm dissolved and Maybury went into
business for himself as an architect and builder. In 1856, he moved to Winona,
MN, a thriving river town. He set up his practice and almost immediately became
successful as an architect and contractor. In 1865, he closed the contracting
business and worked full-time as an architect. Maybury designed many of the
larger homes and business blocks in Winona, in addition to churches (including
the Presbyterian Church in La Crosse, WI and the First Baptist Church in
Winona), and the Winona County Court House (1888). He died in Winona on
February 9, 1917.

Jefferson Maybury was born in Winona, MN, on March 2, 1858. He began
working in his father's architecture and contracting office as a young man and,
after leaving high school, trained under Edward P. Bassford in St. Paul for one
year (1880). He then returned to Winona to become his father's partner on
January 1, 1881. C.G. Maybury & Son, as the firm was called, continued
until well past the turn of the century. In 1903-1904, Maybury was appointed a
specifications writer for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. After
that, he returned to Winona for a brief time, then departed for Seattle, WA, in
1904. He worked as architect for the Board of Education. Maybury died in
Seattle on May 5, 1928.
