Biographical Note

Archie Ashelman was born in Ada, Minnesota, in 1891. He was employed
as a draftsman for Hancock Brothers of Fargo from 1905 to 1910 and became a
partner of William Gage around 1915. Their partnership was terminated in 1917
when Ashelman volunteered for the U.S. Army and was subsequently killed in an
automobile accident just prior to his entry into the officers' training
program.

William J. Gage was born in New York City, studied architecture at the
University of Illinois before his employment with Long, Lamoreaux and Long of
Minneapolis (1911), and later joined Ellerbe and Round of St. Paul (1912-1913).
After moving to Fargo in 1913, Gage drafted for Haxby and Gillespie until 1915
when his partnership with Ashelman began. Around 1919, Gage moved to Seattle
and then to California in 1921.
