Biographical Note

The Scottish Rite Temple is a large stone and brick structure that
began as Fowler Methodist Episcopal Church, designed by Warren H. Hayes in
1894. Later large additions were made in 1906 and 1918 by Harry W. Jones and
Bertrand & Chamberlin, respectively. The structure is on the National
Register of Historic Places.

Warren Hayes was born in Prattsburgh, NY, on August 22, 1847. He
attended Watkins Academy and Genessee Wesleyan Seminary ( Lima, NY). He went on
to graduate from Cornell University in 1871 with a degree in civil engineering.
Hayes opened an architectural office in Elmira, NY, in 1871 and worked there
until relocating to Minneapolis ten years later. He died in Minneapolis on
August 27, 1899.

Harry Jones was born near Kalamazoo, MI, on June 9, 1859. He was
educated in the University Grammar School at Providence, RI, and at Brown
University, where he graduated in 1880. He then attained a Bachelor of Science
degree in architecture at MIT in l882. Jones worked for H.H. Richardson for a
year and then moved to Minneapolis (1883). Following extensive travel in
Europe, he returned to Minneapolis in 1885 and practiced there for nearly fifty
years. He died in Minneapolis on September 25, 1935.

Arthur Chamberlin was born in Solon, OH, on March 12, 1865. He was
raised in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He opened an architectural office in
Minneapolis in 1884. He moved to Seattle, WA, in 1890 and worked there in a
succession of firms until returning to Minneapolis in 1896 to join George
Bertrand in a partnership which lasted until 1931. Chamberlin died in
Minneapolis on September 30, 1933.

George Bertrand was born in Superior, WI, on June 22, 1859. He was
educated in the public schools of Boston and trained in several architects'
offices in Boston and Minneapolis. He set up his own practice in Minneapolis in
1886 and joined Arthur Chamberlin in practice a decade later. He died in
Minneapolis on October 31, 1931.
