		<head>Biographical Sketch for Countess Elizabeth Phelps Resse, circa
		  1838-1924</head> 
		<p>Elizabeth Woodbridge Phelps Pearsall Resse was the daughter of Mrs.
		  Elizabeth B. Phelps, who was active in the early club movement. The
		  <emph render="italic">Revolution</emph>, the paper for which Susan B. Anthony
		  was business manager, was for a time printed at Mrs. Phelp's house. Her
		  daughter was first married to Robert W. Pearsall and started the first
		  agricultural school for girls in this country on her Long Island estate.
		  Sometime before 1879 she married Count Pio Resse of Rome. In Rome and Florence
		  Elizabeth did much work in the tenement districts and was active in many
		  philanthropic social movements. She was also a composer and was close friends
		  with Rubinstein, Liszt, and other musicians.</p>

		<p>The collection contains several hundred letters to the Countess Resse
		  from friends and others and some miscellaneous materials. Correspondence
		  includes letters from Amy Beach (composer), Marian MacDowell (wife of Edward
		  MacDowell and founder of the MacDowell Colony), Jeremiah Curtin (folklorist and
		  historian), Katharine Beecher Stetson (composer and daughter of Charlotte
		  Perkins Gilman and Charles Walter Stetson), Grace Ellery Channing (poet,
		  granddaughter of William Ellery Channing, second wife of Charles Walter
		  Stetson) and Tyra Kleen (Swedish artist and author) among others. </p>
