Biographical Note
Malcolm Macdonald Willey was born in 1897 in Portland, Maine. He
received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Clark University in 1920 and a
master's and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. After teaching at
Dartmouth and Syracuse universities, he came to the University of Minnesota in
1927 as an instructor in sociology. He became a full professor in 1929, Dean
and Assistant to the President in 1934, and Vice President of Academic
Administration in 1943, retiring in 1963. Dr. Willey next headed a Ford
Foundation team at the University of Calcutta (1963?-1968), and then joined the
faculty of Maryville College (Tennessee), working as academic executive officer
(1969-1971). He died from cancer in 1974.
Scope and Content Note
The collection includes correspondence, ships' bills of outfit and
shipping receipts, bills of sale, deeds, contracts, wills, court proceedings,
and receipts for whaling, all involving individuals, ships or property located
in or around Sag Harbor, New York, and collected by Mr. and Mrs. Willey. In
addition, the collection contains reprints of articles written by Willey,
dealing with various aspects of the history of Sag Harbor.
