Materials are open to research without restriction except for portions designated as restricted, confidential, or sealed. For the latter material, prior permission in writing from the President of the Minnesota Orchestral Association is required.
Permission to examine this collection will be granted to any qualified researcher upon completion of an application form. The original documents do not circulate and may only be used in the Reading Room of the Manuscripts Division.

Transferred to the archives from the mid 1970s on an irregular basis. Thirty-seven bound volumes and a large collection of unbound programs were transferred to the collection from University Archives, September 2001.

Programs will be transferred to the archives on an annual basis.
The collection is organized into bound programs, unbound programs, and other publications arranged by title. Each group is arranged chronologically.
Early programs did not have a distinct title; there were separate programs for each concert. In 1969 the program format changed; programs were prepared for each month and contained information about all the concerts that were to be performed in that month. The first title was Symphony (vol. 1-V). In 1974 the title changed to Showcase (but the volume numeration was retained; vol. VI – [ongoing]).
Tour programs are generally located in Series 6.1 with administrative materials about various tours. Metropolitan Opera programs are located in Series 6.5. Additional programs may be found in Series 5.1 (Public Affairs) and in PA12G.
Complete sets of bound orchestra programs are located at the Minnesota Orchestra Library, Minneapolis Public Library, and in the Minnesota Library Access Center.

This collection does not include a complete set of programs. Each volume contains programs from an entire season, September through the summer. Popular concerts are included with the regular subscription concerts. Many volumes contain lists of works performed and lists of concerts at the beginning of the book. Programs are arranged chronologically. There are 7 volumes of M.S.O. concerts in St. Paul.
A set of those volumes for which there are duplicates are stored in the Manuscripts Division for easier access.
This collection does not include a complete set of programs. The collection includes programs for regular subscription seasons, popular concerts, some special programs, and season announcements and brochures. It also includes a few tour programs from the early years of the Orchestra that were in scrapbooks (Series 9.1). Some season folders include special publications by Northwestern National Life Insurance Company about conductors, famous works, etc.
Included in this series are short-lived publications of the Orchestral Association.
