		<head>Historical Note</head> 
		<p>Historically the musicians of the Orchestra have had a Personnel
		  Manager who was a member of the Orchestra and who represented their interests
		  with the Association. During the 1950s 
		  <persname>John MacKay</persname> and 
		  <persname>Jess Meltzer</persname> served as personnel manager. Since
		  that time other personnel managers have been 
		  <persname>Clifton Jackson</persname>, 
		  <persname>Ronald Balazs</persname>, and 
		  <persname>Ronald Hasselmann</persname>. 
		  <persname>Julie Haight-Curran</persname> became Personnel Manager in
		  1993. She was the first Orchestra Personnel Manager who was not also a
		  musician. </p> 
		<p> In the late 1970s the Orchestral Association hired a staff member who
		  dealt with human resources for the Association's staff. Thomas Manion may have
		  been the Association's first Human Resources Director. The files in this
		  collection are from both the offices of personnel manager and human resources
		  director. They had been merged at some point early in the archives' history. In
		  the future, this group of materials will only represent records from the office
		  of the Personnel Manager. Human Resources records will be in a different
		  series.</p>

		<head>Scope and Content Note</head> 
		<p><emph render="underline">Boxes 1-8, 10</emph> contain personnel files
		  from the offices of various staff members including 
		  <persname>Charles Fullmer</persname>, 
		  <persname>Tom Manion</persname>, 
		  <persname>Richard Cisek</persname>, 
		  <persname>Richard Bass</persname>, and 
		  <persname>Clifton Jackson</persname>. They were re-arranged from the
		  original offices of origin. They seem to have come from the President’s office,
		  Human Resources Department (after its establishment), General Manager’s
		  offices, and the Orchestra Personnel Manager’s office. The files relate to
		  personnel matters pertaining to both Orchestra staff and musicians. In many
		  files, only a sample of items were retained. </p> 
		<p>The Labor Negotiations files, <emph render="underline">Boxes
		  6-7</emph>, are confidential. They include correspondence regarding personnel
		  and staffing issues within the Orchestra. </p> 
		<p><emph render="underline">Box 9</emph> is a card file, perhaps kept by
		  the Personnel Manager. There is one card for each musician that lists details
		  of employment: which instrument and chair, when they left the Orchestra and for
		  what reason, death details when relevant. Also included are cards listing the
		  principal players in each section from 1903 through the 35th season.</p> 
		<p><emph render="underline">Boxes 11- 27</emph> are from the office of
		  the Personnel Administrator and the Personnel Assistant. They were responsible
		  for securing replacement musicians and additional musicians when necessary. The
		  files contain concert-by-concert information including rehearsal orders,
		  repertoire, and information relating to hiring. For some years there were two
		  binders for each season, one from the Personnel administrator and one from the
		  assistant; much of the materials were duplicates, so the two sets of records
		  were merged and duplicates were discarded.</p>
