		<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Maestro Skrowaczewski was the sixth music director of the
<corpname>Minnesota Orchestra</corpname> from 1960-79. [The name of the
		  orchestra was changed from
<corpname>Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra</corpname> during his tenure.]
He continues to be both a major conducting figure and a highly regarded
composer and currently serves as the Orchestra's conductor laureate. During his
lengthy tenure Orchestra Hall was built and the Orchestra moved to a year-round
		  season.</p>
<p>Born in Lwow, Poland, Skrowaczewski studied piano and violin as a
child. An injury to his hands during World War II terminated his keyboard
career and he subsequently concentrated on composing and conducting, becoming
music director of the Katowice Philharmonic (1949-54), Krakow Philharmonic
(1959-66), Warsaw National Orchestra (1956-59) and principal conductor of the
		  Hallé Orchestra (1984-91). </p>
<p>Additional information about Skrowaczewski is available in Grove's
		  Dictionary of Music.</p>

		<p><emph render="underline">Box 1</emph> contains correspondence to and
from Skrowaczewski regarding his role as music director and his professional
activities around the world. Files may have been kept in the office of
		  Orchestra President, Donald Engle.</p>
		<p><emph render="underline">Boxes 2-4</emph> contain notes and
correspondence regarding composers, conductors, and other Orchestra artists. A
portion of the files in Box 2 are files of Orchestra performances, similiar to
those in Series 5.3. Files in these boxes seem to be from Skrowaczewski's
office; some of the correspondence is from his secretaries: Nada M. Oslund,
1970-72; Linda Britton, 1974-75; Debbie Gilbertson, 1976-78. These files
document programming of contemporary music especially a series of programs of
Minnesota composers, "Contemporary Music Concerts" which was partially funded
by the NEA. The documents give insight into Skrowaczewski's programming and
artistic decisions. Routine correspondence and artists' publicity materials
		  were discarded.</p>
