		  order founded by Ignatius Loyola in 1540. During the early modern period, the
		  Jesuits established missions throughout the world, including such regions as
		  India, China, Japan, and the British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies
		  in the Americas. </p>

		  battles with the Portuguese, discussions of the state of the Jesuit missions,
		  including their commercial activities, the arming of the Indians, descriptions
		  of specific encomiendas and haciendas, the actions of slave raiders, internal
		  Jesuit administrative affairs, operation of Jesuit schools, and documents
		  related to the expulsion of the Jesuits.</p>
