<head>Biographical/Historical Note</head>
<p>A journalist and writer, editor of Zgoda, the official publication of the Polish National Alliance of the U.S. of N.A., Joseph Wiewiora was born and educated in Poland. He began his journalistic career as a teenager with the now defunct Dziennik Zjednockzenia. In 1929-1930, he worked for Gwiadzda Polarna with Waclaw Gasiorowski in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, returned to Dziennik Zjednoczenia in 1930 and under the editorship of Frank Barc became the youngest city editor in Chicago in 1931. He left newspaper work to became a newscaster for Polish programs at a Hammond, Indiana, radio station, and conducted programs for Ratay Furniture until 1939. In 1940, he worked at the Pullman Ordnance Works in Hammond until he was drafted; he served in the Southwest Pacific and was assigned as editor of wartime newspapers. In 1945, he was discharged with a bronze star, worked for the Conkey Publishing Company, as chief investigator of the Juvenile Court of Lake City, Indiana, and in 1958 became Chicago office director of the Polish American Congress, then of Dziennik Zwiazkowy, and of Zgoda.</p>

<p>Papers (1973-1979) of Joseph Wiewióra include drafts of articles pertaining to the U.S. Bicentennial and of other Zgoda articles and advertisements; background for articles including press relieases from the Polish National Alliance of U.S. of N.A., Polish National Alliance by-laws, a booklet on the 4th convention of Polonia Society, issues of Zgoda, a booklete entitled In the Mainstreams of American Life, correspondence, including a letter from Jody L. Powell, Jr., and photographs.</p>
