Biographical/Historical Note

The Serb National Federation was formed by the merger of various Serbian fraternal organizations, beginning in 1901 with the founding of the Serbian Orthodox Society. In 1929, the two largest associations, Srbobran-Sloga and Saves Sloboda united to form the Federation. In 1960, the Federation merged with the independent society, Oblich. A final merger occurred in 1963 when the Serbian Beneficial Union (Jedinstvo) joined the Federation. The Federation is the largest Serbian-American benevolent society; it has over 21,000 members in the United States and Canada. Its purpose is to provide insurance, promote and preserve Serbian culture, and provide sports and educational activities. Its official organ is American Srbobran, which began publication in Pittsburgh in 1901 as the SRBIN; its name was changed in 1905. It is the oldest continuously published Serbian newspaper in the United States.
