Biographical/Historical Note

An attorney active in local and state government, George A. Scigliano (1874-1906) was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was city councilman (1901-1903) for Boston's 6th ward, the first Italian leader elected to public office. From 1904 to 1906, he was a state representative. Scigliano, who was much loved by the Italian community for his efforts on behalf of Italian immigrants, was an anti-Mafia crusader, anti-padrone system, and anti-immigrant banks, which were often corrupt.
