Theodore Saloutos, an eminent historian of agrarian politics and reform movements, was born in Milwaukee, Wis., son of immigrant parents from Peloponnisos. He taught at the University of Wisconsin, Oberlin College, and the University of California, Los Angeles. While at Oberlin College he began work on Greek immigration which ultimately resulted in publication of The Greeks in the United States (1964). He was deeply involved in Greek community affairs, participating in organizations such as the Sons of Pericles (Milwaukee), the Order of AHEPA, the Hellenic University Club of Southern California, and the Save Cyprus Council of Southern California. Saloutos wrote several major works and numerous articles, and was a frequent speaker.
Papers (1932-1982) of Theodore Saloutos include personal and professional correspondence; research notes; documentation of organizational, teaching, and political activities; photographs; diaries; and memorabilia. Correspondents include Louis Adamic, Pete Domenici, Roger Daniels, Victor Greene, Oscar Handlin, Gary Hart, Andrew T. Kopan, Charles C. Moskos, Moses Rischin, Joseph Rouchek, Carl Frederick Wittke, Rudolph Vecoli, Alan Cranston, and Birch Baye.
Monographs and publications relating to agriculture and agricultural history (except immigrants in agriculture) were separated and sent to Special Collections Department, the Parks Library, Iowa State University Library, Ames, Iowa.
