A physician, Rempel (1886) was born in Ukraine in the Mennonite village of Gradenfeld, near the Azov Sea. He was educated at the University of Dorpat, in Estonia, where he met his wife, Welda E. Witzmann. He earned his M.D. in 1913. He served as a medical officer in 1914 in the Russian Army and later for the White Army, until he and his wife fled in 1920, following the Revolution. His siblings were deported to Siberia and remained in concentration camps there. Rempel and his wife wandered in Europe for some time before coming to the United States in 1922. They settled in Minnesota and Dr. Rempel practiced in the Mennonite community of Brownton.
Papers (1985) of Dr. Dietrich D. Rempel consist of an unpublished typescript of memoirs entitled "Holy Cross to the Hammer and Sickle". The memoirs relate events during the Russian Revolution of 1917.
