Biographical/Historical Note

A fraternal organization, the National Slovak Society was founded in 1890 in Pittsburgh, Pa. It is the oldest Slovak society in the United States, and has over 450 lodges. Its first officers were Peter V. Rovnianek, Rev. Louis Novomesky, and Anton S. Ambrose. In 1913, at the Society's 11th Convention, a resolution was adopted providing for the Young Folk's Circle. The Society publishes its official organ, the bi-weekly newspaper National News (Národný Noviny) and the annual, Národny Kalendár.
