Reino Makela (1915-1977) was born in Ishpeming, Mich., the son of immigrant parents. In 1931, the entire family migrated to Karelia in the Soviet Union, where Reino married and worked most of his life as a lumberjack. Several family members, including Reino's youngest brother and his father-in-law were imprisoned during the Fenno-Russian conflict of 1939-1940.

Scope and Content

Papers (1958-1981) of Reino Makela (1915-1977) consist of letters he wrote to Eva Helen Erickson. Makela was born in the United States and emigrated with his family to Karelia in the Soviet Union in 1931.
