Biographical/Historical Note

The Hungarian Evangelical Reformed Churches in the United States had strong ties to the homeland, fostered by the American Action plan devised by the Hungarian government in 1903. The goals of the plan were to protect emigrants from political pressure, including assimilation into American society, and to encourage their return to Hungary. The American Action program operated through the churches (Catholic as well as Protestant) to alleviate problems with the American church hierarchies and strengthen ties with the homeland. Hungarian congregations in Canada and the United States which joined the homeland church received financial and spiritual assistance from the General Conventus of the Reformed Church of Hungary. The records in this collection document the most successful period of the American Action program.
