<head>Biographical/Historical Note</head>
<p>The First Catholic Slovak Union (Prvá Katolícka Slovenská Jednota) was organized in 1890 as a fraternal benefit society. It is the largest Slovak fraternal benefit society in North America and has over seven hundred lodges in the United States and Canada. There is also a youth auxiliary and a sports club attached to the Union. The FCSU provides members with life insurance, social, and cultural activities. Its publications include Jednota (a weekly newspaper), the yearbooks Furdek and Kalendár Jednota, and books relating to Slovak history and culture.</p>

<head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>Records (1890-1958) of the First Catholic Slovak Union comprise applications for membership, correspondence of the Supreme Secretary with individual lodges, records of the central offices, and membership ledgers. Correspondence of the Supreme Secretary and the lodges relates to membership dues, insurance rates, payment of death benefits, and acceptance and expulsion of members. Correspondence with more than 600 lodges is included. Correspondence of the Supreme Secretary and other Supreme officers documents such matters as chartering of new lodges. Also included are minutes of annual conventions (1928-1958), reports of the officers, and membership lists (1890-1896).</p>
