Biographical/Historical Note

The Finnish Socialist Federation (Suomalainen Sosialistijärjestö), founded in Hibbing, Minn. in 1906, was the first successful attempt to unite all Finnish socialists into one national organization. At its peak strength (1912-1914) it was the largest foreign language federation in the Socialist Party of the United States. The Markham, Minn. chapter belonged to the Midwestern District of the Finnish Federation. Although the Federation broke up in 1920, some of its former local chapters continued to refer to themselves by their old name.
