<head>Biographical/Historical Note</head>
<p>S. Joseph Avara was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were immigrants from Sicily. Avara has served OSIA in Baltimore at the local level as a member of the Lord Baltimore Lodge, later at the State level and then in the Maryland Grand Lodge as Vice President and State President. At the Supreme level he served in positions of Vice President from 1979 to 1987. From 1987 to 1989 he served as National President.</p>

<p>Collection contains correspondence and minutes from the period when Avara served as National President. Also included are runs of the OSIA News and Il Leone for the period 1980 to 1989.</p>
