Biographical/Historical Note

Max Ascoli (1898-1978), an Italian Jewish intellectual and author, held the chair of Philosophy of Law at the University of Rome until he left Fascist Italy in 1932 to come to the United States on a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship. He was active in the Mazzini Society, an anti-fascist organization founded in 1939 by Italian intellectuals who had fled fascist Italy. The organization was named for Giuseppe Mazzini, a patriot prominent in the move for unification of Italy after the defeat of Napoleon. The Society was dedicated to informing Americans about conditions in Italy.
