<head>Biographical/Historical Note</head>
<p>Charles Anzalone (1888-1959) was born in Cefalidina, Sicily, and came to the United States with his parents in 1896. He worked for six years as a laborer on Louisiana sugar plantations and then moved in 1902 to Independence, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, to pick strawberries. He became a farmer and leader in the strwberry industry, and was prominent in business and civic affairs. Anzalone, a devoted follower of Huey Long, was active in local politics; he was alderman and then mayor of Independence, and later a state representative.</p>

<p>Papers (1937-1970) of Charles Anzalone (1888-1959), an Italian American immigrant in rural Louisiana, include biographical information; correspondence; and newspaper clippings pertaining to his political career; materials pertaining to legislation; and a seminar paper by John V. Baiamonte, Jr. Anzalone was a leader in the strawberry industry and was active in Louisiana politics.</p>
