Scope and Content

Pattison was an expert on the Spanish novelist, Benito Pérez Galdós
and much of his work on Galdós is evident in this collection. Two books on
Galdós that are a result of his research, were published in 1954 by the
University of Minnesota Press, and in 1975 by Twayne Publishers.

Five folders in the collection contain research on Mary Adriana Tate,
whom Galdós knew, and with whom he had a family connection. Other research that
stands out in the collection includes folders on Iberian-Basque Syntax, and on
Emilia Pardo Bazán, a novelist and contemporary of Benito Pérez Galdós.

While the collection contains two folders of personal correspondence,
there is little else to indicate any other interests and activities Professor
Pattison may have had. Finally, although he was Chairman of both the Department
of Romance Languages (1954-1960, 1966-1967), and the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese (1968-1970), no mention is made of this in the Papers, and there is
no documentation of any departmental correspondence nor of any committees on
which he may have served.
