The Northwest Chapter of the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) was formed in 1946 as the Association of Tabulating Supervisors (ATS), also known as the Remington Association of Tabulating Supervisors (RATS). ATS/RATS was one of over 25 groups to join the newly formed National Machine Accountants Association (NMAA) in 1951 and became the Northwest Chapter for NMAA members in the Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area.
In 1961, NMAA changed its name to the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA). As a regional chapter, the Northwest Chapter had a representative on the Executive Council who served with executive officers and implemented policy decisions of the International Board of Directors. Membership included information systems professionals from all levels of management including systems engineers, researchers, and systems designers from the Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area.
DPMA’s mission was to advance the information processing profession in business, industry, science, education, and government. The Northwest Chapter upheld the purposes of the DPMA in addition to supporting the DPMA in a number of other ways through continuing education and professional certification. The Northwest Chapter produced a newsletter, hosted dinners and provided speakers for their members, and sponsored the annual Northwest Computer Show and Conference.
In 1997, DPMA was renamed the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), to better reflect its broad membership.
The records of the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), Northwest Chapter, 1963-1997, document the chapter’s activities and membership primarily from 1981 to 1997 through chapter newsletters, membership rosters, conference program schedules, and bylaws.
