Anne Marie Jauss was born February 3, 1902, (some sources say 1907) in Munich, Germany. The daughter of German landscape painter George Jauss, she studied art at the State Art School in Munich, and later lived in Berlin. She traveled a good deal in Europe, and in 1932 moved to Portugal. While in Portugal she worked as an illustrator, designer, and decorator, and exhibited her paintings. She came to the United States in 1946, and worked as an artist. In the 1940s she began illustrating children's books, and area she had long been interested in. Throughout her long and prolific career, she illustrated many author's works, as well as her own. She drew much of the inspiration for her illustrations of folk and fairy tales, legends, and stories of the saints, from the past, especially from folk art. She believed that it was crucial to tell and illustrate stories sincerely and simply. She also illustrated a number of books about science and nature and carried her beliefs in sincerity and simplicity into these works also. Her illustrations are noted for their detail and accuracy, and help young readers to understand different concepts and processes in nature and science. She died on September 13, 1991, in Milford, New Jersey.

The collection contains production material for 48 titles published between 1947-75. It includes both manuscript and illustrative material, with an emphasis on the latter. The manuscript material is for 3 titles and includes corrected typescripts, galley and page proofs, front matter, notes and research material, and type samples. The illustrative material includes illustrations done in a variety of media, many with separations, studies and sketches, photostats, layouts, dummies, proofs, color samples and swatches, notes, a small amount of correspondence, and some miscellaneous art work not identified with any title.

Part of this collection was originally given to Dr. Irvin Kerlan, who in turn donated his collection to the U. of Minn. Additional material was placed on permanent loan by Anne Marie Jauss during the 1970s and in 1983.
