<p>Gerald McDermott was born January 31, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. He
received a B.F.A. from the Pratt Institute of Design in 1964, and later worked
as a graphic designer and filmmaker. In 1972 he published his first retelling
of a folktale, <emph render="italic">Anansi the Spider: A Tale from the
Ashanti</emph>. The book retold a West African folktale about a spider that
must decide which of his six sons to reward after each saves his life. The book
received a Caldecott Honor Book citation in 1973. McDermott received the
Caldecott Medal in 1975 for another illustrated retelling of a folktale,
<emph render="italic">Arrow to the Sun</emph>. Critics praised both books and
McDermott's innovative style and blending of modern design techniques, vibrant
colors, primitive art traditions and straightforward narratives. His books were
also lauded for depicting complex and archetypal fold symbols of various world
cultures. He has continued to retell and illustrate folktales and myths from
around the world, and critics have continued to praise his stories as
entertaining and appealing to adult readers as well as to young audiences. </p>
