She graduated
		  from Smith College in 1960, and received her M.Ed. from the University of
		  Massachusetts-Amherst in 1976. After college she worked for several magazines
		  and publishers as editor and in 1963 published her first book for children,
		  <emph render="italic">Pirates in Petticoats</emph>. Throughout her long career
		  she has written pictures books, novels, short stories, verse and a play for
		  children, young adults, and adults as well as editing fantasy and science
		  fiction short story collections. While best known for her fairy tales and
		  fantasy, Jane Yolen is equally at home writing fiction with a contemporary
		  setting and non-fiction, some of the latter drawing on her interest in her
		  Jewish-Quaker beliefs, love of New England and its history, and her interest in
		  the natural world.</p>
		<p>All of her books are noted for their "craftsmanship" and her
		  beautifully realized interplay of language and story is particularly evident in
		  her fairy tale picture books such as <emph render="italic"> The Emperor and the
		  Kite, The Sultan's Perfect Tree, Dove Isabeau</emph>, and others. This same
		  ability to create entrancing images through language is also found in her young
		  adult stories such as <emph render="italic">The Magic Three of Solatia</emph>.
		  All of these books like the best of traditional fairy tales convey subtle
		  messages about life's pleasures and harsh realities and the existence of both
		  "gentle" and "rough" magic. Jane Yolen also writes science fiction stories,
		  many with a humorous, parodying style such as her "Commander Toad" books that
		  poke fun at many "Star Wars" characters and cliches. Some of her more recent
		  works for young adults have dealt with provocative topics such as the Holocaust
		  in <emph render="italic">The Devil's Arithmetic</emph> and religious
		  responsibilities and belief versus personal feelings and the "World" in
		  <emph render="italic">The Gift of Sarah Barker</emph>, a story of two young
		  people in a Shaker community.</p>
		<p>Jane Yolen has received many awards and citations for her work as an
		  author, including the 1988 Kerlan Award, and she continues to write and edit
		  children's and young adult books in a variety of genres.</p>
	 </bioghist>
	 <scopecontent encodinganalog="520" id="sc">
		<head><emph render="bold">Scope and Content</emph></head>
		<p>Jane Yolen's papers focus on her work as an author and editor of books
		  for children and young adults.
