Biographical Sketch

Sharon Bell Mathis was born February 26, 1937, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As a black woman she remembers her childhood as filled with loving family, and racism outside the family. During her sophomore year at college she eloped with LeRoy Mathis, and put her dreams of writing on the shelf for several years. Her first children's story, The Fire Escape was published in 1969. Since then she has written many more books, and has received numerous awards and honors. She says that she writes to salute the strength in black children, and to say to them, 'stay strong, stay black and stay alive.'
