The collection includes manuscript material for some unpublished stories; short stories and articles, possibly published in magazines; and material published in a textbook. It also includes correspondence both to and from the author, clippings, reviews, a typescript of her 1993 Kerlan Award acceptance speech, contracts, research materials, miscellaneous rejected manuscript material, and in with some of the correspondence, additional clippings and reviews, photographs, articles, pamphlets, discs, agreements, awards, and a copy of a thesis on Mary Stolz's work. 14 linear ft. Biographical Sketch

Mary Stoltz was born March 24, 1920, in Boston, Mass. She began writing for children and young adults in the 1950s. She continued to write prolifically for four decades. She also writes for adults, and has published numerous short stories for magazines. She is noted for her sensitivity and attention to every day events, and her stories are cited for their realism and detail, she was one of the first authors to be recognized for her accurate representations of the emotional concerns of adolescence. She focus on many contemporary problems such as divorce, family relationships, and boy-girl attachments, as well as social issues. Both her young adult novels and children's fiction have entertainment value as well as emotional depth, and they tend to focus on the characters' present ordinary experiences, recognizing that even the simplest of events have special qualities which can lead to change. She often uses subplots to extend and and expand her stories and the characters' feelings. Many of her books focus on friendship and a love of animals. She has received two Newbery Honor designations, for Belling the Tiger (1962) and The Noonday Friends (1966). In 1993 she received the Kerlan Award given by the University of Minnesota. Scope and Content

The collection contains manuscript material for 38 titles published between 1959-1994, and includes typescrsipts, some corrected, carbon or photocopied, holographs, photocopies, galley and page proofs, some corrected, clippings, reviews, contracts, research material, agreements, dummies, front matter, a style sheet, and a substantial amount of correspondence both to and from Stolz. There is also manuscript material for unpublished and rejected stories, and material for stories published in textbooks, and miscellaneous material. The correspondence also includes photocopies, discs, clippings, reviews, articles, photographs, pamphlets, awards, agreements, and a thesis written on Stolz's work. One manuscript also includes some typescript comments by Charlotte Zolotow.
