<p>Karla Kuskin was born July 17, 1932, in New York City. She began
writing and drawing at an early age. Her first book, <emph render="italic">Roar
and More</emph>, was written as part of the requirement for her B.A. degree
from Yale U. She had to create and print the book using a small press at the
university. The book was subsequently published successfully. Themes for her
books grew out of her New York childhood and her own experiences as a parent.
Many of her books are self-illustrated, and she thinks of herself primarily as
an illustrator. Her work has won many awards and honors. </p>
