Biographical SketchCarol Fenner was born September 30, 1929, in Almond, NY, and died of cancer, February 16, 2002, in Battle Creek, MI. She wrote nearly a dozen children's book, beginning in 1963 with Tigers in the Cellar, which she also illustrated. She earned several literary awards, including a Newbery Honor Book award in 1996 for Yolanda's Genius. Gorilla, Gorilla, which relates the true story of a lonely gorilla who lived in a Tokyo zoo, won a Christopher Medal and was Library of Congress "book of the year" in 1973. Phyllis Fenner, a librarian, anthologist, reviewer, and writer about books for young people, was her aunt. Carol credited her with being a "delightful and unpretentious influence."

Accession Information:
Carol Fenner was first invited to become a donor to the Kerlan Collection early in 1969. Later that year she expressed interest in doing so. In 1986 she contributed a considerable amount of material, and additional donations were made later.
