Leonard P. Kessler was a born October 28, 1921, in Ohio. He followed a career as author and illustrator, which he began as a designer and illustrator of children's books in 1951. Besides fiction for children, Kessler wrote many non-fiction and informational books. Much of his work was done jointly with his wife, Ethel.

The collection contains both written and illustrative production materials. The written material includes typescripts, some corrected, correspondence, a holograph, and a galley proof. Illustrative materials illustrations in ink and watercolor, ink, ink and gray marker, ink and typescript, black and white, felt pen, watercolor and wash, color and ink, ink and wash, some with separations. It also includes sketches in marker; colored pencil; ink; ink, color and pencil; mixed media; crayon; and watercolor . There are also pencil studies, layouts, dust jackets, pasteups, separations, dummies, notes, and color proofs. Some of the material is photocopied.
