		  Sketch</emph></head>
<p>Charles Mikolaycak was born January 26, 1937, in Scranton,
Pennsylvania. He received his B.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 1958, and early in
his career worked as a free-lance illustrator, and later as an illustrator and
designer at Time-Life Books. He married Carole Kismaric, a writer and editor,
in 1970, and they would later collaborate on several books for children. In
1967 he illustrated his first book for children, Helen hoover's
<emph render="italic">Great Wolf and the Good Woodsman,</emph> and throughout
his career illustrated works by many well-known authors, including Jane Yolen,
Elizabeth Winthrop, Margaret Hodges, and Eve Bunting. He is perhaps best known
for his illustrations of folktales and biblical stories. His drawings are noted
by critics for their brilliance and lushness, and for his ability to capture
the mood of a story, as well as imbuing a work with a strong sense of time and
place, real or fantastic. Mikolaycak did not believe in drawing down for
children, and felt they could appreciate evocative pictures; he was also keenly
aware of the needs of storytelling and the importance of depicting a work
truthfully. He received the 1987 Kerlan Award for his contributions to
children's literature. He died in Manhattan, New York, on June 23, 1993.</p>
