Biographical Sketch

Myra Cohn Livingstone was born August 17, 1926 in Omaha, Nebraska. She attended Sarah Lawrence College in New York, receiving her B.A. in 1948. Livingston first began writing poetry at college, and her work was published in children's magazines. She published her first book of poetry for children Whispers and Other Poems in 1959. She continued to publish her own poetry and also became well-known as an anthologist and critic of children's poetry. She focused on introducing children to different types of verse such as limericks and haiku, and poetry from all eras and countries. Myra Cohn published hundreds of poems and is widely recognized as one of the foremost writers of poetry for children during the latter twentieth-century. Myra Cohn Livingstone won the Kerlan Award in 1994. She died August 23, 1996, in Los Angeles, CA.

Scope and Content

The collection contains production material for seventy-three titles published between 1959 and 1993, as well as a substantial amount of correspondence between Livingston and her editors and publishers, particularly Margaret McElderry, beginning in 1946. The collection also contains some poems and material not verified as published. The collection includes typescripts, holographs, galley and page proofs, front matter, notes, research material, dummies and layout notes, research material, and bookmarks. The correspondence for individual titles is with the title, while the large body of general correspondence with editors and publishers from 1946-1971 is separate.
